About Us

Like most Eyecare Plus Practices, we in Nelson Bay take your eye health seriously.

HD-OCT

We have invested in a High Definition Ocular Coherence Tomographer or HD-OCT. This instrument uses ultrasound to analyse and record the retina, macula and optic nerve head tissue.

The HD-OCT in addition to Digital Retinal Imaging is excellent for diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as macula degeneration, glaucoma and diabetes. This test has become one of the best and earliest ways of detecting these conditions.

For more information on Macula Degeneration, visit the MD website at www.mdfoundation.com.au

Digital Retinal Imaging

The camera allows us take instant high resolution images of the inside of your eye. For the first time, you can see the back of your own eye!

Ian and Katy will explain if anything is wrong and tell you what you need to know. If everything is healthy, we will have your retina photo available as a baseline for next time - making early detection of eye disease even more accurate than ever before.

If you have diabetes - this test is essential. If you have any family history of glaucoma - this test is essential. If you are over 40 and your vision is important to you - then this test is essential. This test is perfect for checking for macula degeneration.

DIGITAL SCREEN LIFE

Just 2 hours in front of a digital screen can cause your eyes to feel strained and dried out. The average Australian spends 10 hours a day staring at some form of screen.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration (MD) is a disease that destroys the central vision that we use for everyday tasks such as reading and driving. It is the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia. For patients older than 50 years, one in seven will have some sign of it. While there is presently no cure for MD if it is detected early enough we can slow its progression.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease which slowly destroys the optic nerve at the back of the eye. In some cases in may move rapidly. It is usually caused by increased pressure inside the eye though it may be caused by poor blood supply or a weakness of the optic nerve. Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma. It is more common as we age but it can occur at any age.

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding or haze of the lens inside the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Opacities in the lens obstruct light from passing through and being focused on to the retina.

Pterygium

One of the most common effects of UV damage to the eye is pterygium. This is a triangular growth of thickened degenerative tissue on the white of the eye (the sclera) that may also extend onto the cornea (the window at the front of the eye).

UV Damage

In recent years, it has been shown that just like sunburn and skin cancers, exposure to ultra-violet (UV) radiation also causes eye damage.

Excessive UV exposure has become an increasing problem since the depletion of the ozone layer.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Approximately 4% of people have diabetes, often undiagnosed. Diabetes can damage many parts of the body, including the eyes, causing vision problems, glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy.
