About Us

Heidelberg’s Trusted Home of Eyecare Since 1980 Eyecare Plus Heidelberg is the clinical successor to the forty-year practice of Robert G. Wood. We are an independent, community-focused clinic providing evidence-based eyecare solutions for families across Heidelberg, Rosanna, Ivanhoe, and the surrounding Banyule suburbs.

For over four decades, thousands of patients have trusted this practice for exceptional clinical care. Our owner and lead optometrist, Dr Nathan Tsalkos (OD), continues this legacy by combining the attentive, thorough approach of traditional optometry with the precision of modern diagnostic technology.

Checkup Plus™: Comprehensive Clinical Care

We believe in thoroughness over speed. We dedicate up to 45 minutes for a complete optical checkup. This allows us the time to perform detailed screenings for early indicators of:

  • Glaucoma & Macular Degeneration: Using advanced OCT Retinal Imaging to monitor your eye health with clinical precision.
  • Dry Eye Disease: Moving beyond basic eye drops to provide tailored therapeutic treatment plans for long-term relief.
  • Myopia Management & Children’s Vision: Dedicated workups to ensure your child’s visual development is on track and protected for the future.

Inclusive Eye Care: Fluent in Macedonian and Auslan

We are proud to be a truly inclusive practice. Dr Tsalkos is a native-level Macedonian speaker and is conversant in Auslan, allowing for seamless, interpreter-free consultations for the Deaf community and Macedonian-speaking families. We believe everyone deserves to be heard and understood when it comes to their health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Parking & Patient Concierge: How to best travel to Eyecare Plus Heidelberg?

As the Burgundy Street precinct undergoes redevelopment throughout 2026, we have taken steps to ensure your visit remains seamless despite the temporary reduction in local street parking. Dr Nathan Tsalkos (OD) and the team recommend the following options:

  • Private Patient Parking: We provide one dedicated private parking space located directly behind the clinic, accessible via the rear lane. Our space is located on the right-hand side of the carport. Once parked, please continue to use our front door on Burgundy Street for easy, step-free access to our clinic.
  • Frontage Parking: Free, 1-hour metered parking is typically available directly in front of our clinic on Burgundy Street for convenient access.
  • Hawdon Street: Ample street and lot parking is available just a short, two-minute walk south of our location, offering a level stroll to our front entrance.
  • Clinical Concierge Pickup: If you are collecting contact lenses or eyewear, we offer a curbside service. Call us when you are 5 minutes away and a team member will meet you at your car (at the front or rear) to hand over your order—no parking required.

Where is Eyecare Plus Heidelberg located?

We are located at 171 Burgundy St, Heidelberg, conveniently situated within the medical precinct near Austin Hospital and Warringal Private Hospital. Our clinic is easily accessible for residents across the Banyule area.

What is Eyecare Plus – Checkup Plus™?

Checkup Plus™ is our premium 45-minute eye health assessment. Unlike a standard vision test, Dr Nathan Tsalkos (OD) takes the time to perform advanced screenings for glaucoma and macular health. Following the exam, Nathan will personally explain your results with total clarity.

How much does an eye test cost?

We are a bulk-billing clinic, and Checkup Plus™ consultations are bulk-billed through Medicare. For advanced diagnostic services and clinical imaging (such as OCT or Corneal Topography), an additional fee of $60–$80 typically applies. Please call our team for a transparent breakdown of fees for your specific needs.

Do you provide eye tests for children?

Yes, we see patients of all ages. Nathan focuses on pediatric eye health, assessing visual development and coordination to identify vision-related learning difficulties early. We aim to make the experience comfortable and engaging for your child.

Do you manage red-eye emergencies?

Yes. As a primary eye care clinic, we provide urgent assessments for red eyes, sudden vision changes, or foreign body removals. You do not need a referral to see Nathan for an emergency eye health concern.

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Please bring your current glasses (even if broken), your most recent contact lens packaging, and a list of any medications. If you have previous eye surgery reports or specialized records from another clinic, these help Nathan build a complete history of your eye health.

Will I be able to drive after my eye test?

In some cases, Nathan may need to use dilating drops to get a clearer view of your retina. These can cause temporary blurred vision and light sensitivity for 2–4 hours. If a dilated exam is planned, we recommend bringing sunglasses and considering alternative transport.

Do you offer curbside pickup for eyewear or contacts?

Yes. To help you navigate the 2026 parking changes, we offer a Clinical Concierge service. If you are in a rush, have sleeping children in the car, or have limited mobility, simply call us when you are 5 minutes away. A member of our team will meet you at your car—either at the front of the clinic or at our rear parking space—to hand over your order.

Do you provide eye tests for VicRoads or commercial driving licenses?

Yes. Nathan performs comprehensive vision assessments for both private and commercial licenses. We can complete the necessary VicRoads vision reports and perform specialized Visual Field testing if required to meet legal driving standards.

How do I claim my Private Health insurance rebate?

We use the HICAPS system, allowing you to claim your optical rebate instantly at the point of sale so you only pay the "gap." Most funds reset their limits on January 1st, so we recommend using your benefits before the end of the year.

Do I need a referral to see an optometrist?

No, you do not need a referral from a GP to see Dr Nathan Tsalkos (OD). You can book directly with us for any eye health concern, including diabetic reviews, red-eye emergencies, or general vision changes.
