About Us
Welcome to Altona Optical! Initially founded by Paul Wilsmore, we have provided optometry services to the local community of western Melbourne for over 50 years.
We conduct all eye health and tests and prescribe eyewear and contact lenses but what makes us unique is our special interests in treating Dry Eye conditions and Myopia ( shortsightedness ) control. For Dry Eye management not only do we prescribe the latest advanced eye drops, but we conduct new “eye drop free” IPL laser Dry Eye treatments. Our expertise in management of reducing myopia includes Ortho K overnight contact lenses and new myopia reducing spectacle lens technology.
You will find our practice to be a comfortable and relaxed environment and easy to access with ample free parking directly in front and behind the practice.
Come in at any time or book online for an eye examination. Sit down with our optometrists in store and have a thorough consultation in under 45 minutes for a complete eye examination and discussion about your eye health. We monitor and detect signs of eye problems for early elimination including:
- General optometry – eye tests, diabetic assessments, macula degeneration and glaucoma management
- Myopia control
- Ortho-K overnight contact lenses
On the spot health fund rebates are provided for eyewear and contact lenses. As we are an independent practice you will find a wide range of interesting, quirky and individual optical frames and sunglasses you will not find elsewhere, so come in a try something new! All contact lens designs and brands are also available including ortho K contact lenses for management of myopia.

Fees, charges & Medicare
Consultation fees
Medicare benefits are payable for most consultations. Some additional fees apply for services that are not yet covered by Medicare. Our staff will be pleased to explain these fees.
Veterans Affairs
Spectacles and contact lenses are provided at no cost for patients covered by Veterans Affairs. Our staff will be pleased to advise you on your entitlement.
Spectacles for the Disadvantaged
Often there are people with a need for spectacles but who are not able to afford the cost, or part of it. Some state governments provide limited assistance for people in need. Please talk to our staff and they will be pleased to explain the eligibility requirements and how to make an application.
