Our Optometrists

Greg Strachan

Greg has been specialising in custom made contact lenses for over 25 years. He is qualified to prescribe and dispense therapeutic drugs used in the treatment of anterior eye diseases.

Greg has served on the Optometrists Registration Board of Victoria for many years.

Sue Strachan

Sue is a Fellow of the Australian College of Optometry, and she is also a Fellow of the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists (or ACBO), which reflects her special interest in children's vision and learning.

Sue is passionate about eyecare being available for everyone and she  has been on many overseas aid camps with groups such as Equal Health, the East Timor Eye Program, YWAM and Global Hand. These programs provide eye care, including free glasses, to underprivileged people in remote areas of countries like  India, East Timor, PNG  and Laos where access to routine health services is very limited. Sue has seen first hand on her trips the incredible difference which a pair of glasses can make to the lives of people who would otherwise be functionally "blind".

Sue served for several years on the National Committee of the Optometry profession's own charity, "Optometry Giving Sight" which raises funds to support such programs.

Jacky Wu
BOptom PGSpCert(CL) TPA

We are very pleased to welcome Jacky to our team. Jacky has previously practiced in Perth, rural Victoria, and New York after graduating from the University of Melbourne. He is interested in contact lenses, being a keen wearer himself, but also loves testing eyes of all ages, particularly children. As such, he has completed postgraduate study in both areas of contact lenses and children’s vision.

On his down time, Jacky loves following all sports, travelling to different countries with his wife, as well as chasing their little Maltese-Cavalier puppy around the house.

Petra Hurleston

Petra graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1990 and is a Fellow of the Australian College of Optometry. She enjoys all aspects of Optometry, especially children's vision - her own young family gives her valuable insight!

In her spare time Petra enjoys watching her daughters playing soccer, cooking and weekends away in country Victoria.

Petra consults at both our Balwyn and Blackburn Practices.

Christa Sipos-Ori

Christa has been working at Strachan Eyecare for over 10 years, after finishing her Masters Degree, Therapeutic qualification and Diploma in Advanced Clinical Optometry, specializing in low vision, contact lenses and children's vision subspecialties.

As well as working for Strachan Eyecare part time, Christa works at the Australian College of Optometry in their various clinics, and teaching the 4th and final year students.

Christa also consults at Vision Australia and conducts examinations of overseas optometrist via OCANZ.

Hana Khoo
BOptom PGDOptom TPA

Hana enjoys full scope optometry including Behavioural Optometry & Vision Therapy. She has completed a Diploma in Advanced Clinical Optometry, a Graduate Certificate in Human Visual Development (including Behavioural Optometry Masters unit at UNSW) and an Ocular Therapeutics Certificate. Strachan Eyecare Plus are strong supporters of the Optometry profession's own charity "Optometry Giving Sight" or OGS. More than 600 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to eye examinations and glasses. OGS targets this need, training local eye health professionals and providing free or low cost consultations and glasses to those who may otherwise remain visually impaired.

At Strachan Eyecare we donate $2 from every pair of glasses sold to this fantastic charity.

Several of our optometrists and staff have volunteered to go overseas on optical aid camps supported by OGS.

For more information please ask our friendly staff instore or see the "Optometry Giving Sight" and "Equal Health" web sites.

Eye Health

Just 2 hours in front of a digital screen can cause your eyes to feel strained and dried out. The average Australian spends 10 hours a day staring at some form of screen.

Dry Eyes

Dry eyes is a common chronic and progressive condition of the eyes affecting a large proportion of the Australian population. Symptoms often include sensations of dryness, burning, stinging, scratchiness and grittiness of the eyes, excessive watering, increased redness and even reduced vision. Symptoms may often be worse in various conditions like air-conditioning or windy, cold or dry environments.

Various management and treatment options are available for dry eyes, however will depend on the cause for dry eyes. Therefore it is important to check your eyes with your optometrist especially if you suffer from symptoms of dry eyes as the solution may be as simple as using eye drops periodically.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration (MD) is a disease that destroys the central vision that we use for everyday tasks such as reading and driving. It is the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia. For patients older than 50 years, one in seven will have some sign of it. While there is presently no cure for MD if it is detected early enough we can slow its progression.

Glaucoma is an eye disease which slowly destroys the optic nerve at the back of the eye. In some cases in may move rapidly. It is usually caused by increased pressure inside the eye though it may be caused by poor blood supply or a weakness of the optic nerve. Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma. It is more common as we age but it can occur at any age.

A cataract is a clouding or haze of the lens inside the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Opacities in the lens obstruct light from passing through and being focused on to the retina.

Astigmatism is an out-of-roundness of one or more surfaces in the eye's optical system.

Spots and floaters are semi-transparent specks of natural materials inside the eye, which sometimes can be seen floating in the field of vision.

Amblyopia, or Lazy Eye, is a reduced vision, generally in only one eye. The condition usually results from poor eye co-ordination, from having a turned eye, or after having one eye which requires a far greater lens power.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Approximately 4% of people have diabetes, often undiagnosed. Diabetes can damage many parts of the body, including the eyes, causing vision problems, glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy.

Hyperopia, or Long-sightedness, causes a person to see clearer at far than at near distances.

UV Damage

In recent years, it has been shown that just like sunburn and skin cancers, exposure to ultra-violet (UV) radiation also causes eye damage.

Excessive UV exposure has become an increasing problem since the depletion of the ozone layer.

One of the most common effects of UV damage to the eye is pterygium. This is a triangular growth of thickened degenerative tissue on the white of the eye (the sclera) that may also extend onto the cornea (the window at the front of the eye).
