About our practice...
Eyecare Plus Clifton Hill belongs to the Eyecare Plus group, an Australia wide network of independent locally owned practices which are regularly accredited for adherence to high standards of clinical practice and procedures. Eyecare Plus Clifton Hill has maintained our 5-star accreditation rating, the highest possible that can be achieved.
The Clifton Hill optometry practice opened in 1985, with Ian Breadon working from a single room immediately above the current premises. The practice expanded and moved downstairs to the existing premises in 1996. Jacqui Lui joined the practice in 2000 and in 2014 transitioned into ownership.
Our practice is very much community based, relying largely on local networks and patient recommendations to grow. Through the years we have cultivated close relationships with local GPs and schools, something we believe is vital in a neighbourhood practice.
At Eyecare Plus Clifton Hill you can be assured of personalised service with our highly skilled team of professionals, many of whom have been proud employees of our practice for over 10 years. We place a priority on high quality individual patient care, with thorough 45 minute consultations and continuity of care from our loyal optometry group.

Our Practice Manager
Jacqui completed her Bachelor of Optometry degree at the University of Melbourne in 1999. Jacqui joined the practice in January 2000, then known as Breadon & Ruegg Optometrists, when one of our long-term optometrists, Nadine Ruegg (now enjoying retirement!) took maternity leave. In the first few years, Jacqui practiced between Clifton Hill and the Victorian College of Optometry (now Australian College of Optometry) where she examined public patients and supervised students on their clinical rounds. In her final year of studies, one of her clinical placements was in Nepal at Tilganga Eye Hospital, where she gained exposure to a wide range of ocular diseases and conditions.
After her role at the VCO, Jacqui continued practising mainly in independent practices, sharing her time between seeing patients and managing our Clifton Hill practice and working at a number of metropolitan Melbourne private practices. Her primary focus for patients is always offering them the best customised solutions and management, hence working in independent practices fitted with her values.
Between 2005 to 2007, Jacqui travelled to China and based her time in Shanghai teaching English to local business students. During her time, she travelled extensively around the country - travel is often a topic of conversation with her patients.
In 2010, both Jacqui and Murray were two of the first ten Eyecare Plus national optometrists to be presented Professional Recognition Awards by Essilor and Eyecare Plus. They attended the Varilux Academy in Paris where they further studied to improve their knowledge of advanced spectacle lens designs so that their patients would benefit from customised prescription lenses of the highest standards using the newest technology.
Outside of optometry, she enjoys travelling and hiking.
Hannah joined our practice in 2010 as an optical assistant whilst completing her Optometry degree at the end of 2012. She was one of the early graduates who were automatically endorsed with therapeutics when the University of Melbourne’s Optometry course structure changed from a four-year to a five-year course to include therapeutic prescribing.
One of her clinical placements in her final year of studies was at the University of Waterloo, Canada.
After graduation, Hannah naturally transitioned into a role as one of our optometrists. She is often complimented on her thorough examinations with her patients and she has a strong interest in children’s vision. She shares her time between our Clifton Hill practice and another independent Melbourne practice. Originally from Shepparton, she has worked in both regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne.
Hannah has special interests in:
- Ocular disease and therapeutic management
- Behavioural and paediatric optometry
- Contact lenses
- Dry eye management
Outside of optometry, Hannah enjoys pilates and baking.
Ian graduated from The University of Melbourne in 1977 and was the original founder of the practice, first starting solo in a small room in 1985, sharing a premise with a dermatology practice. In his early optometry career, Ian was the clinical director at the Victorian College of Optometry (now Australian College of Optometry) and has always been actively involved in the optometry profession, representing and being the voice of optometry and its members, including the support for therapeutic prescribing for optometrists before it was available. He was the first group of optometrists who completed the therapeutic course when optometrists were finally endorsed to prescribe ocular medication in 2008. His incredible involvement in optometry had landed him advisory roles in Medicare, Medibank Private, the Australian Optometric Panel and at the University of Melbourne when the Bachelor of Optometry course was restructured to Doctor of Optometry.
Ian has witnessed and been a part of great advances and change in the optometry profession and as he phases into retirement, he still enjoys his one and a half days a week practising, seeing his very regular and loyal patients of at least 20 years.
When Ian is not practising, he is regularly relaxing in Merricks Beach but his patients know he would always come back to Clifton Hill for his bread.
B.App.Sc (Optom) Hons
Murray joined our practice late 2016 and has extensive experience in all aspects of optometry and is therapeutically qualified. He trained in Queensland and has worked across Australia in a variety of settings. He has been working in Melbourne since 2005 and is currently President of Optometry Victoria, which is the peak representative body for optometrists in Victoria.
Murray has worked with Fred Hollow Foundation Papua New Guinea training nurses in eye care. He has also volunteered as an optometrist in East Timor several times.
In 2010, both Murray and Jacqui were two of the first ten Eyecare Plus national optometrists to be presented Professional Recognition Awards by Essilor and Eyecare Plus. They attended the Varilux Academy in Paris where they further studied to improve their knowledge of advanced spectacle lens designs so that their patients would benefit from customised prescription lenses of the highest standards using the newest technology.
Murray has special interests in:
- Specialty contact lenses (keratoconic, mini-scleral, post-graft and ortho-keratology)
- Management of eye diseases
- Paediatric optometry
- Aviation eye examinations - Murray is a credentialed optometrist with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority
Outside of work Murray enjoys spending time with his wife and young child as well as trying to stay fit.
