Welcome to Eyecare Plus Optometrist Eltham

Melbourne optometrist Eyecare Plus Eltham focus on comprehensive eye examinations, prescription sunglasses, spectacle frames, contact lenses and eye health care for the whole family.

History

Our practice was established in 1993 as Cochrane & Debney Optometrists by Shane Debney and Anthea Cochrane. Shane has been the primary optometrist working full-time since then.

A practice priority has been keeping up with the latest diagnostic equipment (including OCT, Visual Fields and Retinal Photography) and maintaining a very strong relationship with local medical practitioners and ophthalmologists.

Shane and Anthea completed under and post graduate training at the University of Melbourne including ocular therapeutics, allowing them to prescribe drops for various eye conditions. Shane also has a special interest in contact lenses.

Our part-time receptionist is Rose.

Location

Eyecare Plus Eltham is located in Luck Street Eltham, across the road from Dan Murphy's.

Car parking is available at the rear of the practice.

Eye Health

Amblyopia

Amblyopia, or Lazy Eye, is a reduced vision, generally in only one eye. The condition usually results from poor eye co-ordination, from having a turned eye, or after having one eye which requires a far greater lens power.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is an out-of-roundness of one or more surfaces in the eye's optical system.

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding or haze of the lens inside the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Opacities in the lens obstruct light from passing through and being focused on to the retina.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Approximately 4% of people have diabetes, often undiagnosed. Diabetes can damage many parts of the body, including the eyes, causing vision problems, glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy.

Floaters

Spots and floaters are semi-transparent specks of natural materials inside the eye, which sometimes can be seen floating in the field of vision.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease which slowly destroys the optic nerve at the back of the eye. In some cases in may move rapidly. It is usually caused by increased pressure inside the eye though it may be caused by poor blood supply or a weakness of the optic nerve. Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma. It is more common as we age but it can occur at any age.

Hyperopia

Hyperopia, or Long-sightedness, causes a person to see clearer at far than at near distances.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration (MD) is a disease that destroys the central vision that we use for everyday tasks such as reading and driving. It is the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia. For patients older than 50 years, one in seven will have some sign of it. While there is presently no cure for MD if it is detected early enough we can slow its progression.

Pterygium

One of the most common effects of UV damage to the eye is pterygium. This is a triangular growth of thickened degenerative tissue on the white of the eye (the sclera) that may also extend onto the cornea (the window at the front of the eye).

UV Damage

In recent years, it has been shown that just like sunburn and skin cancers, exposure to ultra-violet (UV) radiation also causes eye damage.

Excessive UV exposure has become an increasing problem since the depletion of the ozone layer.
