Frequently Asked Questions
What is an optometrist?
Optometrists are primary eye care providers, meaning we take care of most of the eye and vision needs of most of the population. We prescribe glasses and contact lens correction, and can diagnose and manage eye health and vision conditions. No referral is needed to see us. If you have an eye or vision problem, we are a very good first stop to make. If there is a reason to see a specialist (ophthalmologist), you will be referred on to one by us.
If I see an ophthalmologist for an eye condition (or my child does), do I still need to see an optometrist?
We think it is a good idea to check in regularly with an optometrist. We can coordinate your care with your specialist and provide your referrals as needed. As the experts in vision, we are the ones to see to it that your vision is optimized whatever specialty treatment you receive. In fact, in some cases, we are able to handle some of the same things an ophthalmologist does, at greater convenience to you.
My vision seems fine, do I need to see an optometrist? Or, my childrens' eyes seem fine to me, is it necessary to see an optometrist?
Absolutely yes. We are very happy to provide eye exams to people with perfect vision. It is important to have the health of your eyes examined on a regular basis, we believe. There are eye diseases that begin with no symptoms to you. The simplest way to ensure your eyes are healthy is to have us take a look at them for you.
We recommend regular comprehensive eye exams in infancy (age 6-12 months), age 3, age 5 and at least every 2 years thereafter through adulthood. In some cases we will want to follow you yearly or more often, in which case you will be advised.
How do you give eye exams to children who don't speak or know letters?
Easy! We have a lot of objective tests that give us findings that do not rely on patient responses. So we test for all the same basic types of things on everyone, namely visual acuities (the sharpness of vision), refractive error (what lens in needed to put the eye into perfect focus), eye coordination and focusing between far and near, eye health outside and inside the eyes, but modify testing procedures depending on the patient's age and abilities.
What is a behavioural optometrist?
There is a lot of good information on the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrist's website so please have a look here:

Do you bulk bill Medicare?
As much as we would like to do this for you, the fact of the matter is that the Medicare rebates of $56.80 once every 3 years (once a year for over the age of 65) and $28.45 for visits in the interim are simply not sustainable to provide quality eye care, with no raise in sight through the year 2020. These rates are significantly lower compared to rebates to other medical providers, or compared to private fees of other health care providers (dentists and chiropractors, for example).
Our fees are payable directly and we use Easyclaim to receive your Medicare rebate back to you quickly and with a minimum of hassle (with the exception of DVA patients are rebated at a higher rate and are bulk billed). We are happy to advise the expected gap payment in your case. When there is a larger gap payment for you with the interim visit rebate, we are happy to discount glasses that you purchase from us. Thank you for understanding and we hope you will notice a difference in the service we provide! Additionally, as a broad scope optometry practice, we provide some special services and procedures that Medicare does not rebate at all. While we try to keep costs affordable to you, you will be advised of extra charges in advance of any procedures that we feel will benefit you.
If you would like to see higher Medicare rebates, please contact your MP and voice support for Optometry Australia's Stop the Freeze campaign, with information here.
Can I fill my glasses prescription anywhere?
That is certainly your right to request a prescription after an eye exam with us. We see glasses as a medical appliance and prefer to dispense our own prescriptions and help you choose the most appropriate options and can assure you top quality materials are used with no corners cut. If you fill the prescription elsewhere, we highly recommend you seek a qualified dispenser for best results. Needless to say, we cannot warranty prescriptions filled outside the practice and fees apply for verifying, repairing or otherwise servicing them. If you are after something in particular, we can usually source something for you. Please let us know if we can help you in any way.
Are you a franchise?
No, we are proud to be a fully independent practice as part of the Eyecare Plus group. Please have a look at the rest of the national Eyecare Plus website.
