What to Expect at Your Eye Exam

Just 2 hours in front of a digital screen can cause your eyes to feel strained and dried out. The average Australian spends 10 hours a day staring at some form of screen.

Learn more about your screen life HERE

At your eye exam we will typically start by asking some basic questions about your eyes, general health and any concerns you may have about your vision. We can also measure the prescription of any glasses you may already have. Afterwards we measure your vision and determine any prescription that will make your vision clearer and more comfortable.

Painless eye health checks are done ensure your eyes are healthy and a digital image of your retina is taken to give us a permanent record of your eye health.

At the conclusion of your eye exam we will discuss the results and recommend an individual plan to give you clear comfortable vision and make recommendations to protect your vision long term. We will provide a written summary of this to take with you.

Please bring your Medicare card, private health and any concession card to your eye examination. It is also helpful if you can bring any previous spectacles and contact lenses that you wear. Please allow 30 mins for your eye examination so we can thoroughly check your vision and eye health.

Consultations, Medicare and Private Health Insurance

Under current arrangements eye examinations attract a Medicare rebate. If any additional tests are recommended that don't attract a Medicare rebate you will be advised of any fees beforehand. Private Health Insurance Rebates typically provide a rebate for the cost of spectacles and contact lenses but not consultations.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration (MD) is a disease that destroys the central vision that we use for everyday tasks such as reading and driving. It is the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia. For patients older than 50 years, one in seven will have some sign of it. While there is presently no cure for MD if it is detected early enough we can slow its progression.

Glaucoma is an eye disease which slowly destroys the optic nerve at the back of the eye. In some cases in may move rapidly. It is usually caused by increased pressure inside the eye though it may be caused by poor blood supply or a weakness of the optic nerve. Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma. It is more common as we age but it can occur at any age.

A cataract is a clouding or haze of the lens inside the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Opacities in the lens obstruct light from passing through and being focused on to the retina.

At Eyecare Plus Gawler we offer some of the most up to date technology to monitor the health of your eyes.

Testing includes;

OCT Scanning in Progress

OCT Scan of a Healthy Eye
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to create a 3D scan of all the nerves and layers of the retina that can't normally be seen.

These measurements help to with early detection, diagnosis and treatment guidance for retinal disease and conditions including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

  • A Digital Retinal Image of
    a Healthy Eye
  • Digital Retinal Imaging or DRI is the process of using a specialized digital camera to take high resolution images of the retina, blood vessels and optic nerve at the back of the eyes. By analysing the high resolution images, we can detect symptoms of eye diseases including Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration. As well as eye diseases DRI can also detect other possible health issues including diabetes and high blood pressure.

A DRI scan is a simple, painless process which only takes a few minutes. The DRI camera allows us to store the digital image for future comparison.
  • Computerised visual field testing
Visual field testing checks if your peripheral vision has been affected. We have equipment to test your visual fields, also known as your side vision, to confirm that everything is in the normal range. This is typically used if we suspect Glaucoma or vision is affected from a brain injury such as a stroke.

What are the Benefits?

By using the latest technology available we have the capability of detecting small changes that couldn't be observed even a few years ago. We may be able to save your sight by picking up eye disease early and arranging treatment before permanent sight loss is caused.

Eyecare Plus Optometrists Gawler specialise in all types of sunglasses and sunglass lenses and we can help you find the perfect fit and look for you.

Quality sunglasses are certainly important, particularly if you spend a reasonable amount of time outdoors. Without adequate protection the suns rays, glare and UV can all damage your vision slowly and imperceptibly. But which pair of sunglasses is right for you and your needs?

Polarised Lenses

Have you tried polarising lenses? In everyday life: outdoors, while driving... you will benefit from the best quality of vision with the lowest glare. Whether you're a fan of winter sports, sailing or other outdoor activities, whatever the season, you won't want to leave home without them!

When light is reflected from a flat surface: road, water, snow, ice... it becomes polarised. This glare, with its specific properties, is extremely dazzling, uncomfortable on the eyes and can not only impair your vision but also damage your eyes. The best way to block it is to use a polarising filter in front of your eyes.

Normal tinted lenses reduce light. But polarised lenses eliminate reflected glare, thus improving visual comfort and safety. They also restore the richness of colours in your environment.

Polarising is available in most prescription sunglasses. This means you can purchase a new pair of high quality sunglasses with your health fund picking up most of the cost!

Quality Sunglasses - Prescription and Plano

Your new quality sunglasses will:

  • protect your eyes 100% from harmful UVA/UVB Rays give greater optical clarity
  • offer double sided scratch resistant coatings enhance colours and improve contrast
