Our Optometrist

Ms Li Chen
B.Optom (Hons) UNSW
Therapeutically Endorsed

Li is our full-time, fully-qualified optometrist and owner of the practice, who graduated with Bachelor of Optometry (First-class honours) at the University of NSW in 2005, and became therapeutically endorsed in 2015.

She has a special interest in diseases of the eye, and has the practice equipped with the latest 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) device capable of detecting and monitoring subtle signs of retinal disease including glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Li is therapeutically endorsed to prescribe medicine for the eye, which gives her the ability to manage eye infections, inflammation, trauma and glaucoma.

For 2 years, Li travelled across Australia in a motor-home as the ambassador for a community health initiative to raise the awareness of Age-Related Macular Degeneration. The Vision Van initiative inspired Li to bring her expertise in eyecare to regional communities, where more quality eyecare is needed.

Our Eye Exams

Our comprehensive eye examination usually takes at least 30 minutes. Most of our eye exam services are bulk-billed, with a few optional exceptions.

Presenting Concern

Our optometrist will take a comprehensive record of your presenting concerns, medical history and family history. This allows us to focus on relevant history that you may or may not realise are important. It also allows for better follow-ups in the future.

Refraction

We take care in issuing glasses prescriptions that will offer the best vision correction possible. This is achieved through careful refraction testing, and trial-framing the recommended solutions to confirm the improvements made to your sight. Sometimes, particularly in children, we may need to use eye drops in order to achieve the correct glasses prescription. We will discuss with you about any side effects on the day of your appointment.

Lifestyle Prescribing

We believe the importance of understanding your lifestyle in order to tailor the most effective optical solutions to your needs. This begins by discussing about the way you use your eyes in your work environment and in any hobbies you may have. Often, you may require more than just one pair of glasses to cover all of your needs. Our optometrist will discuss and often show you in a trial how the recommended solutions will work.

Binocular Vision

Good eyesight is much more than just about seeing well out of each eye alone. Out optometrist conduct binocular vision tests to analyse how both eyes are working together. This is particularly important for children, adults experiencing near point stress, and those who have noticed double vision.

Colour Vision

We have the ability to screen for colour vision deficiency, and explain about how deficiencies can affect your day to day life and future work prospects.

Contact Lenses

Our optometrist can discuss with you the possibility of wearing contact lenses as part of your vision correction solution. We take the time to fit the most suitable lens, and to teach you how to insert, remove and clean them. Don't let yourself think your age limits your possibility of wearing contact lenses! We have fitted contact lenses successfully for both children and retirees!

Slit Lamp Eye Health Examination

A special light and magnifier will be used to analyse the front and back of your eyes as part of our routine eye health examination. This helps us to detect signs of cataracts, dry eyes, conjunctivitis, corneal disease, and retinal disease like glaucoma and macular degeneration. With this equipment we are also able to perform foreign body removal and in-turned eye lash removal.

Digital Retinal Photography

We are equipped with the latest digital retinal photography scanner capable of digitally capturing photographs of the back of your eyes. This is important for screening for macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic eye disease, and also aids the optometrist with the monitoring of particular findings. Dilating eye drops may be required for a wider view, and we will discuss with you any side effects on the day of your appointment. Fees for this service may apply.

Optical Coherence Tomography

Our state-of-the-art Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner is capable of providing 3D cross-sectional analysis of both the front and back of the eye via ultrasound technology. This is particularly useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of macular disease, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. The test is painless and on occasions may need the use of dilating eye drops. Fees for this service may apply.

Intraocular Pressures

We check the eye pressure as part of our routine eye examination, using a very friendly equipment that does not involve puffs of air or eye drops. There is no pain involved and is highly accurate, making it a popular device used even by eye specialists.

Visual Field Analysis

Our optometrist will recommend the need for peripheral vision testing to you if your symptoms or signs warrant this. It may form as part of an assessment for headaches, glaucoma, vision-affected stroke patients, medication-related side effects, night blindness, and unexplained vision loss. This is a Medicare bulk-billed service.

Reporting and Referrals

We will gladly write reports to your doctors, where it will aid in the management of your systemic health problems such as diabetes. Referrals to eye specialises will be made in a timely-manner. We can also complete Roads and Maritime Services and Mobility Parking Permit forms fitness-to-drive eye assessments, and we recommend you to bring them in before you see your doctor. Feel free to let us know if you need reports or forms filled out for work-related eye assessment.

Eye Health

Amblyopia

Amblyopia, or Lazy Eye, is a reduced vision, generally in only one eye. The condition usually results from poor eye co-ordination, from having a turned eye, or after having one eye which requires a far greater lens power.

Cataract

A cataract is an opacity or clouding of the lens inside the eye, then distorting the light as it enters. Cataracts are often confused with pterygium but cataracts cannot be seen on the surface of the eye.

Colour Vision And Colour Blindness

Colour blindness is almost always inherited, although it can be acquired condition as a result of some diseases or injuries.

Diabetes And Vision

The health of the retina is very dependent on a good blood supply to the eye. Diabetes compromises this circulation and can cause serious damage to the retina (diabetic retinopathy).

Digital Eye Strain

Computer Vision Syndrome or Digital Eye Strain are terms used to describe vision-related problems that result from prolonged - and particularly close up - viewing of devices with modern screens such as flat screen televisions, computers, tablets like iPads and mobile phones.

Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease is caused by a chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye.

Dry eye can cause a scratchy sensation or the feeling that something is in the eye, with people often complaining of irritated, itchy, watery eyes.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease where the pressure within the eye is typically increased (although not always). This can damage parts of the eye, and if left untreated may result in blindness.

Hyperopia

Hyperopia, or Long-sightedness, causes a person to see clearer at far than at near distances.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration (MD) is a disease that destroys the central vision that we use for everyday tasks such as reading and driving. It is the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia. For patients older than 50 years, one in seven will have some sign of it. While there is presently no cure for MD if it is detected early enough we can slow its progression.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Meibomian ("my-BOH-mee-an") glands are the tiny oil glands which line the margin of the eyelids (the edges which touch when the eyelids are closed). There are about 25 to 40 meibomian glands in the upper eyelid and 20 to 30 in the lower eyelid. The function of these glands is to secrete oils onto the surface of the eye. These oils help keep the tears from evaporating too quickly. The tear film lubricates and keeps the surface of our eyes healthy; it also affects how clearly we see.

Myopia And Myopia Control

Myopia, or Short-sightedness, is a condition in which near objects are seen more clearly than objects which are far away.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a gradual loss in the focusing ability (accommodation) of the eye and is part of the normal vision changes we all experience as we age.

Pterygium

A pterygium is a triangular growth of degenerative tissue on the white of the eye (sclera), usually on the nasal side, that may extend onto the clear window of the eye called the cornea.

Spots And Floaters

Spots and floaters are semi-transparent specks of natural materials inside the eye, which sometimes can be seen floating in the field of vision.

UV Damage

In recent years, it has been shown that just like sunburn and skin cancers, exposure to ultra-violet (UV) radiation also causes eye damage.

Excessive UV exposure has become an increasing problem since the depletion of the ozone layer.
